Social Media Marketing Won’t Work For You… Unless

Social Media Marketing is the answer to all of your marketing woes. Just add a little fan page here and a tweet there and watch the money roll in! Right? Not likely.
We’ve been building websites and developing online marketing strategies for 10+ years. During this time, there’s been one thing we can always count on… the eternal quest for the easy button – Thanks, Staples!
Let’s face it, social media marketing is a complete and utter waste of time. Seriously. It will not work for you, unless…
You have a strong web presence
You know your audience
You have a content strategy
Yes, there is hope. There is a clear way forward in this sea of social chaos. It’s called a plan!
Step One for your Social Media Marketing Plan: Have a strong web presence

Social media channels are generally considered what social media expert Chris Brogan calls your marketing “outposts.” These are the channels where you distribute your content to increase its reach and effectiveness.
Your website is your home base.
Your website should be the source for the original content you intend to distribute. It should be well organized and ready for visitors from your outposts at any time. After all, the goal of those outposts is to drive targeted traffic back to your site.
A good home base should consist of the following:
A CMS (Content Management System) – usually something like WordPress, Joomla or a proprietary CMS. These allow you to manage your content without any technical skills. Keeping your content fresh means that repeat visitors (including Google) will always find something new and interesting. And new visitors won’t see a bunch of stale old content.
A Blog – business blogging is incredibly effective when it comes to giving visitors the content they want. You can blog about industry trends, news, tips, etc. This is the original content that you’ll use on your social media outposts to connect with the audience there.
A Good Site Design – your website should be easy to use and look at. Use design to guide the outpost visitors where you want them to go. User friendly navigation and targeted landing pages will lead visitors to do something while they are there.
Calls to Action – when someone lands on your site, they are lost for a moment. It’s a new place, they are disoriented. Use a call to action, designed for attention and ease of use, to guide them along and tell them the something you want them to do.
It’s your home, make it nice and inviting!

Step Two for your Social Media Marketing Plan: Know your audience

I give lots of talks on marketing – social, mobile, search engine and online marketing. If I was only allowed to make one statement in any of these talks, it would be this…
Know your target audience!
It is that important. If you don’t know who your target audience is, how do you expect to connect with them on social media?
What’s the first thing you do when you meet someone? You get to know them. Why? So, you can have a more meaningful conversation. So you don’t stand there awkwardly talking about the weather waiting for a reason to leave.
In all of your online properties – owned and borrowed – you need a consistent message. Knowing your audience helps you to craft this message and target it towards them.
Take some time and really get to know your target audience – also known as your buyer personas.
Even if you think you know them, take some time to really understand their “story.” It will pay off in the long run. Not just with social media, but with all of your online and offline marketing efforts.
Step Three for your Social Media Marketing Plan: Have a content strategy

Effective content takes time, research and planning. If your plan for social media is to just post some stuff, you’ve already failed.
If you’ve worked on steps one and two, then step three should come easy. Since you already know your audience, then you should have a good idea of the content they want.
Determine where you can get this content for them…
Original Content – can you write blogs posts or produce webinars, white papers or videos on these topics?
Blogs – what blogs out there are full of great posts on these topics? Set up some Google Alerts and start reading different blogs to find great content. Then share it with your target audience.
Life – every day you are given great sources for content you can share with your target audience. Tune into these by listening with your target audience in mind. Check out this post on content marketing for more on this.
Once you’ve identified some sources of great content – both original and shared – you will want to develop a plan to organize and deliver this content.
The best way to map out your content strategy is with an editorial calendar. An editorial calendar can come in many shapes and sizes; whatever works best for you.
Typically, it tends to look most like a chart…

The point is to map these out ahead of time and do it strategically. The more you plan ahead, the less overwhelmed you will be. The better your content will turn out.
Even if you are the only author, having a plan will still help you keep your sanity.
With your content strategy mapped out, you’ll know how you’ll be using your social channels in the future. These efforts will be thought out, well crafted and strategically targeted to your audience.
And if you map out your content well enough you might even end up with enough for an eBook or full length book. But, that’s another topic for another post.
Now, I’m not saying that social media isn’t a place for fun and spontaneity. Certainly let your personality shine through. Create real relationships with people on social media. Don’t just be a content shilling machine.
But, when you have a plan, and you produce and share content that is of value to your target audience, you will attract those people to your social channels. Your connections and successes will grow from there.
What do you think about social? Do you think a free for all is the best approach or do you prefer to have a plan? Let me know in the comments section below.

Sometimes I just like to say thank you to the greatest mom in the world… Mine

You are the sunlight in my day,
You are the moon I see far away.
You are the tree I lean upon,
You are the one that makes troubles be gone.
You are the one who taught me life,
How not to fight, and what is right.
You are the words inside my song,
You are my love, my life, my mom.
You are the one who cares for me,
You are the eyes that help me see.
You are the one who knows me best,
When it’s time to have fun and time to rest.
You are the one who has helped me to dream,
You hear my heart and you hear my screams.
Afraid of life but looking for love,
I’m blessed for God sent you from above.
You are my friend, my heart, and my soul
You are the greatest friend I know.
You are the words inside my song,
You are my love, my life, my Mom.

So apt for a girl like me

“You may not be her first, her last, or her only. She loved before she may love again. But if she loves you now, what else matters? She’s not perfect – you aren’t either, and the two of you may never be perfect together but if she can make you laugh, cause you to think twice, and admit to being human and making mistakes, hold onto her and give her the most you can. She may not be thinking about you every second of the day, but she will give you a part of her that she knows you can break – her heart. So don’t hurt her, don’t change her, don’t analyze and don’t expect more than she can give. Smile when she makes you happy, let her know when she makes you mad, and miss her when she’s not there.”

Anxiety… It is not the unmentionable with our amazing Heavenly Father

It often amazes me that people are amazed by the fact that I admit to suffering from anxiety and panic attacks. No, I don’t do this because I have found the ultimate cure even though I have been on medication, visited physiologists, tried breathing techniques etc. etc. etc. it is because I believe that I do “control” my problem relatively well and if I can help one person by sharing how I do this well then call me crazy …. I am glad I have served a purpose.

In this crazy existence we call life, so many people “suffer” from some form of physiological disease … From depression to anorexia, OCD, ADD, anxiety, social phobia, agoraphobia …. And because these are deemed as making one “nuts” people don’t like to share their problems and others, most of whom also suffer from one or all of the above, shun those who are honest about it.

So I suffer with a fear of dying… My sister got sick when I was very young and death has been prevalent in my life since then. She is fine but my sub conscious mind is still affected by the years of fearing mine or someone I love’s death…. Not an excuse for what I have, just a reason. Or so I thought…. It then occurred to me that in nearly every walk of my life I meet people who find it uncannily easy to share their problems with me and by simply listening and sharing my story I have managed to help a few of them…. Needless to say this has even happened when I have wound up in hospital with a fatal bee sting , no I am not allergic, breathing into a brown bag and convinced my final breath was seconds away.

So maybe I should look at this “disease” as a blessing and not a curse. Yes it is something I would love to be free of as it does hamper certain aspects of my life. However maybe just maybe it is a way in which my Daddy in Heaven has given me a way of giving back… By helping those worse off then me.

As I think of my unborn children I am glad this is not genetic as tears roll down my cheeks this is truly something i would not wish on anyone

There is always hope though… Always… as I think of you and pray for you whoever you may be reading this post no matter what you suffer from. Know this … Nothing on Earth is more powerful then the name of Jesus…. When you feel scared, lonely, depressed, insecure or desperate … Just say His name and allow him to fill you with His peace that passes all earthly understanding.

It helps me everyday in everything I do. If you would like to get in contact with me about your problem, religious or not… I really don’t judge if it is something else that will help you and be right for you I will do my best to assist in finding it… Please do so at jbayvel@yahoo.com.

If you are reading this now and are experiencing any of these terrible things … Try sing or say these words… They have got me through many an attack where I could have been in hospital…

Jesus, what a beautiful name
Son of God, Son of Man
Lamb that was slain
Joy and peace, strength and hope
Grace that blows all fears away
Jesus, what a beautiful name

Jesus, what a beautiful name
Truth revealed, my future sealed
Healed my pain
Love and freedom, life and warmth
Grace that blows all fears away
Jesus, what a beautiful name

Jesus, what a beautiful name
Rescued my soul, my stronghold
Lifts me from shame
Forgiveness, security, power and love
Grace that blows all fear away
Jesus, what a beautiful name

Digital Marketing Trends you cannot Ignore

Digital marketing is a discipline in flux. We face an onslaught of shiny new technologies and platforms that promise to “change everything.” Marketers are creating similarly breathless headlines, proclaiming the next revolutionary devices/apps/social networks.

Yet, even smart marketers don’t know what changes the future will bring; but they do need to be aware that their industry is changing every day. For instance, to reach consumers marketers need to be increasingly mobile, engaging, relevant and aware of the contexts in which we currently operate.

I don’t pretend to know the future. But the decisions and products of Apple, Amazon and other innovators will affect how we live in the years to come. As we anticipate our connected, Minority Report-style future, here are five big marketing ideas to embrace now to get ahead of the curve.

1. Location Services

Consumers are out there and many want you to find them. Location features of social apps such as Foursquare, Ban.jo and Path are potential goldmines of important consumer data. The near field communication (NFC) technology in products like Google Wallet is just starting to show its potential. And while privacy issues surrounding location services will need to be resolved, consumers are still demanding that marketers understand all of their daily contexts and find ways to make their lives easier. If the rumors are true and the iPhone 5 has NFC embedded, expect these features to go from leading edge to mainstream.

2. New Ad Formats

While new online video and mobile platforms are — unsurprisingly — attracting a lot of heat, their marketing spend is still way out of whack, compared to the amount of time consumers spend there.

Don’t just throw money at these new channels. Instead of pre-roll video ads and other “forced view” options, look to user-initiated solutions that respect the user’s time and interests. Research new ad formats that help brands look beyond clutter and “banner blindness,” such as in-image ads, which integrate brand messages elegantly within relevant content.

3. User-Generated Curation

User-generated curation (UGC) is powered by content discovery apps such as Pulse, Flipboard, Fancy and Foodspotting. Content producers and merchants provide the feeds, and consumers tweak them to suit their interests and contexts, filtering data and curating personalized information platforms.

These models can help brands become relevant to consumers and provide the next great opportunities for marketers. For instance, Pinterest has received applause from consumers and marketers alike, and has demonstrated the power that personal curation and relevance can have for engagement.

4. Advertise by Format

Everyone is excited about mobile’s potential, and tablets present appealing platforms or consumer engagement. If you’ve decided to advertise on mobile apps, what are you going to do with the user after you get him or her to tap? Will you use the platform to its full potential? Or will you roll out the same old display strategy you’ve been using online, praying that users will choose to interact with your ad?

It’s time to get creative and imagine the new possibilities. Media industry guru Ken Doctor points to innovative advertisers who take advantage of the iPad’s unique format. “What’s better for an insurance company like Liberty Mutual than threatening you with disaster (tornado, earthquake, flood) and then, by simply tilting your iPad see the damage magically disappear,” he poses.

5. Integrated Marketing

Being relevant to your customer in every context improves brand recall and enhances engagement. Ditch the silos in your advertising strategy (e.g. this is what consumers watch on TV vs. on their phones) and focus on the most important thing — your customer.

In this increasingly interconnected world, consumers are not necessarily thinking in terms of silos. Research shows that 72% of consumers want to be engaged with an integrated marketing approach, but only 39% are receiving that. Google found that consumers had 74% brand recall when the advertiser’s integrated strategy carried across mobile, TV and online.

While the world is not yet seamless, QR codes and “bridging” apps like Viggle deliver second screen relevance, and can help marketers unleash multiplatform, integrated relevance.

Today’s profound advancement in tech and media is changing how we interact with and filter our world. Smart marketers can succeed by engaging with the trends that are resonating most with the emerging consumer of today.
